Beer Baskets and Bowls
These are all hand woven baskets, made from
the ILLALA palm leaves and other grasses.
They consist of the natural colours of the
materials being used. For the colours, natural
dyes have been used found in indigenous plants
grown in KZN. These plants are boiled in water
and then the basket materials are soaked in
the dye to create the different colours used
in their patterns.
These
baskets have many uses. For instance they
can be used for holding liquids such as
beer, once the basket is wet it will swell
and will become watertight.
Other
use is to hold their grain. The smaller
version of these baskets is their Herb Basket,
which is used for keeping various herbs
for medicinal use.
